biohazard revelations

BIOHAZARD Revelations was originally developed for and released on the Nintendo 3DS. It follows Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Parker Luciani as they face Veltro. A terrorist cell looking to infect the world’s oceans.

PLOT

The game follows Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Parker Luciani during the “Terragrigia panic” and the “Queen Zenobia incident”.

A bioterrorist group known as Il Veltro is threatening to release the T-Abyss virus into the world’s oceans.

The team quickly discovers the effects of the virus.

FEATURES

BIOHAZARD Revelations was the first handheld title to truly evoke the feeling of a full-fledged console BIOHAZARD on the go. It took advantage of the Nintendo 3DS dual screen setup, displaying an automap and available weapons for the player. It was also a landmark title since it decided to focus on the horror elements of older titles instead of the fast-paced action-packed gameplay which was prevalent in BIOHAZARD titles at the time.

Revelations also features an episodic format, which favored gameplay on the go. Sound also played an important role in the game, both alerting players of the dangers ahead and elevating the horror aspect of the game as well.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

BIOHAZARD Revelations was written by Dai Satō, who had previously worked on Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

CAPCOM chose to develop Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS as they felt that the handheld’s 3D capabilities could produce a tense and scary experience which would make the player feel like something was lurking around every corner. CAPCOM was looking to develop a BIOHAZARD title which would return the series to its horror roots and not feature the heavy action sequences which predominated BIOHAZARD 5.

BIOHAZARD Revelations was developed simultaneously alongside The Mercenaries 3D, this allowed CAPCOM to improve Revelations’ graphical performance thanks to the experiences learned during the development of Mercenaries 3D. The Genesis scanner was incorporated to cut down on performance issues. CAPCOM also designed many enemies to have a simple skeletal structure for in-game physics, which also improved performance for the handheld title, thus giving the Player a console-like entry on the Nintendo 3DS.
