hideki kamiya

Hideki Kamiya’s first directed title for Capcom was the influential Resident Evil 2. After originally being a system planner for the original Resident Evil, Kamiya was encouraged by Shinji Mikami to direct the sequel, which became a great challenge due to Kamiya not liking horror.

BIO

Kamiya was born in the Nagano prefecture on December 19th, 1970.

During his early years, Kamiya was greatly influenced by arcade games. He had originally purchased a NEC PC-8801 to learn programming, but spent his time playing video games instead.

Kamiya was originally turned down by Sega and Namco after graduation.

CAREER

Kamiya joined Capcom in as a system planner in 1994. His first title for Capcom was the original Resident Evil released in 1996. Kamiya struggled many times under the guidance of Shinji Mikami. He, alongside other system planners did not understand Mikami’s decisions as a director. However, once they played the game they understood the “style” of Resident Evil.

Kamiya’s career really took off after he directed Resident Evil 2, many developers at Capcom thought very little of Kamiya’s ability as a game director. Kamiya decided to bring more action into the series to attract new players.

His love for the action genre would translate into new project such as Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe.

After leaving Capcom due to creative differences, Hideki Kamiya founded Platinum Games in February 2006 in Osaka, Japan. At Platinum he created new franchises such as Bayonetta, a spiritual successor to Devil May Cry and the Wonderful 101. The studio features many ex Capcom staff, thus bringing a high level of polish and presentation to their titles.

Platinum Games has established itself as one of the premiere Japanese houses that can produce new and exciting franchises, as well as being a top partner for many studios looking to outsource their franchises. Platinum Games also features many “guest star” directors for their titles, such as Shinji Mikami’s Vanquish and Taro Yoko’s Nier: Automata. Platinum Games also prides itself in attracting new talent emerging from Japan’s game development scene and promoting them quickly.
