id tech
id Tech 5 has been used by Shinji Mikami’s team Tango Gameworks to develop The Evil Within and it’s sequel The Evil Within 2. All Zenimax internal developers utilize id Tech and are free to make modifications to the engine as needed.
INFO
With the acquisition of id Software by Zenimax media, this streamlined the development process for all internal developers under the Zenimax banner. However, due to this development, it is unsure if id Tech 5 will ever be released under the public domain license as originally intended by its lead developer John Carmack.
Tango Gameworks made many modifications to the engine, the most prominent was the third person perspective for The Evil Within. Due to the number of changes made by Tango, they have officially named their version of id Tech as the STEM Engine. As seen on the initial splash screen for The Evil Within 2.
It is unsure if all Zenimax developers share their contributions to the engine, leading to the possibility of a “Super id Tech Engine” to be utilized in-house.
Also due to the acquisition, was the removal of external licensing of id Tech to all potential third-party development partners.
